4. Cubaan membunuh DSAI semasa penangkapannya tahun 1998 bilamana unit UTK Polis menyerbu masuk rumah DSAI dengan senjata lengkap pada 20 Sept 1998. Namun usaha itu gagal kerana UTK mendapati terlalu ramai orang awam dirumah DSAI semasa itu.

Atas sebab itulah kami membuat keputusan menasihatkan DSAI menerima
tawaran Kedutaan Turki untuk melindungi DSAI. Kami berharap rakyat
bertenang namun sentiasa mengikuti perkembangan mutakhir dan
mendapatkan maklumat dari sumber-sumber yang sahih. - Adios Zulkifli Noordin.

ANWAR IBRAHIM OUT FROM TURKEY EMBASSY

LIVE BY PHONE WITH ANWAR IBRAHIM - INDONESIA TV

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ANWAR LAUNCHES COUNTER-ATTACK OVER SODOMY CASES

By Bill Tarrant

KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, accused of homosexual assault, is lodging a police report on Tuesday claiming the police chief and attorney-general fabricated evidence against him in a similar case a decade ago.

Police are investigating the former deputy premier for sodomising a young aide, the same charge that landed him in jail for six years before the Supreme Court overturned that conviction in 2004.

The allegation surfaced at a time when the revitalised opposition under Anwar was making moves to engineer parliamentary defections aimed at bringing down Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi's government.

Anwar planned to lead hundreds of his supporters to a suburban Kuala Lumpur police station at 0600 GMT to file a report saying the current police chief and attorney general fabricated evidence against him in the 1998 sodomy case when they were part of a team that investigated and prosecuted him.

Anwar said in a statement on Sunday that the new sodomy case was "organised by interested parties" to smear him because he had recently obtained evidence implicating Inspector General of Police Musa Hassan and Attorney General Gani Patail in fabricating evidence in his 1998 sodomy conviction.

Anwar, who took refuge in the Turkish embassy for 36 hours until Monday evening, said the new allegations were a political conspiracy to thwart his return to parliament.

Anwar said on Monday he had planned to announce this week he would run in a parliamentary by-election. Winning a seat would be the first step on the road to his ambition of leading the opposition to power for the first time in Malaysian history.

HISTORIC GAINS

The loose opposition alliance made historic gains in the March 8 general election, winning five of 13 state governments and coming within 30 seats of taking control of the 222-member parliament.

Anwar has also filed a defamation suit against his accuser. Anwar's political party says the aide, Saiful Bukhari Azlan, was planted in their camp by people close to the ruling National Front.

Neither the national police chief nor the attorney general have commented on the case. But other officials, including the prime minister and deputy prime minister, have strongly denied the government had anything at all to do with it.

Saiful, who was taken to hospital for examination, has been released and is now under police protection, according to media reports quoting his family.

But the Star newspaper on Tuesday quoted his uncle as saying government officials would not help when approached about his story and some police stations turned them away as well when they tried to lodge a police report.

Federal criminal investigations chief Bakri Zinin has vowed to protect the accuser and accused and to conduct a fair and thorough investigation."

The United States cautioned against any politically motivated investigation into Anwar.

"The main point for us is that the rule of law needs to stand above politics," said Tom Casey, the U.S. State Department spokesman.

"And we would certainly oppose any use of law enforcement or judicial procedures for anything other than legitimate purposes of the law."

Casey noted Anwar had been convicted previously on similar charges. "So we would hope that there's not a pattern here."

"But certainly we would be concerned that anything that is done, be done in a way that is appropriate, that is a legitimate investigation of charges that might exist under Malaysian law and would not be anything that was a politically motivated investigation or prosecution," Casey said.

Analysis by Kalinga Seneviratne

SINGAPORE, Mar 13 (IPS) - The presence of five bloggers on opposition benches in Malaysia’s newly elected parliament must be galling for the ruling National Front (NF) coalition, which was returned to power in Saturday’s general elections minus its long-held two-thirds majority.

Internationally renowned blogger Jeff Ooi, a 52-year-old former advertising copywriter, won a seat in the western island state of Penang, while Oxford University economics graduate Tony Pua, 34, claimed a seat in the bustling Kuala Lumpur suburb of Petaling Jaya with over a majority of over 19,000 votes. Both were candidates of the left-leaning Chinese Democratic Action Party (DAP).

Wining seats in state parliaments for the multi-racial Parti Kadilan Rakyat (PKR) were prominent bloggers Nik Azmi Nik Ahmed and Elizabeth Wong, a noted human rights activist and media reforms advocate. Tian Chua, a former political prisoner under the notorious Internal Security Act, was another claimant to a seat in the national parliament.

The only prominent blogger who lost a fight was Badrul Hisham Shaharin, who contested a semi-rural constituency south of Kuala Lumpur and lost to Khairy Jamaluddin, Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi’s controversial son-in-law.

Prem Chandran, chief of the Internet news portal Malaysiakini, argues that the Internet had a major influence on the election outcome because the issues which make a difference, such as corruption and interference in the judiciary, were only carried on news sites like theirs.

There were large swings in urban and semi-urban areas, especially (to opposition) among first-time young voters, Chandran told IPS. Internet, he said, allowed political parties to reach out to a very important constituency which was non-existent in previous elections.

Raja Petra Kamaruddin, owner of malaysia-today.net, argues that the Internet’s biggest contribution was to get the middle-class to the ballot box. The opposition is infested with bloggers noted Raja Petra in an interview with Singapore’s ‘Strait Times’.

Alternative media cured the apathy the middle-class has. They were no longer saying: ‘’Let’s not bother. Suddenly, it was let’s go and give the opposition a chance.’’

Denying the NF (or Barisan Socialis) coalition two-thirds majority in the national parliament, which the party enjoyed for the past 40 years, is seen as a major victory for the opposition. The opposition also won majorities in five state parliaments, an act never before accomplished in Malaysia. Nationally, the government won only 51 percent of the vote and in fact would have lost the elections if not for the slew of seats they retained in the eastern Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah.

It was direct access to the Internet in urban areas -- ironically, because of the government’s policy of developing a Multimedia Super Corridor -- that allowed urban voters to access information not available in the government-controlled mainstream media.

Chandran pointed out that apart from the Internet, the use of SMS (telephone text messages) and photocopiers took information rural electorates, bridging the digital divide. He also said that Malaysiakini’s Internet-streamed television programmes were copied on to VCDs and circulated for viewing in rural homes (where VCD machines are popular).

More than the Internet, SMSs played a critical role in spreading the opposition message, says Sankaran Ramanathan, managing partner of Media Plus Research Consultants. Because rural people now have mobile phones, it was easy to break the urban-rural barrier.

"There were Internet groups which exchanged messages via e-mail, especially among the Hindu (Indian minority) community… I know at least half a dozen users," Ramanathan told IPS. "They were not registered organisations and were urban based. There were similar groups among the (minority) Chinese community," he added.

Ramanathan pointed out that both the information minister and his deputy were beaten by opposition candidates promoted by the Internet media.

Though Malaysia’s mainstream newspapers, radio and television, are mainly private-owned, their licenses are held by business people closely connected with the constituent parties of the NF.

But analysts argue that the poor reputation that Malaysia’s newspapers have, as mouthpieces of coalition parties, worked against them, and in favour of alternative media.

Malaysian mainstream media are directed and constrained by two interrelated entities; the state and the market, argues Zaharom Nain, associated professor of communication studies at the Science University of Malaysia. Through direct and indirect ownership there tends to be collusion between the state and the market.

What the alternative media has done, according to Nain, is improvise communication systems using a combination of the Internet, mobile phones, blogs, e-mails, SMS and the YouTube. They were not only used effectively by opposition parties but also by civil society to raise consciousness and create awareness, he noted.

Chandran feels the government may now be tempted to impose sanctions on the Internet media to protect them from further damage as Singapore has done. They have a tough decisions ahead of them, Chandran said, adding that it was best if they adopted path of reform by opening up the media and cracking down on corruption -- changes that people obviously want.

Ramanathan believes that the government will not take to the repressive path simply because they have already tried to take bloggers to courts, without much success, and failed in its attempts to police the Internet.

Gayathri Venkiteswaran, executive director of the Centre for Independent Journalism, believes that with five opposition-led state governments taking office in Malaysia it was now possible to completely reform the media scene.

‘’State governments can allocate grants and other financial support for communities to have their own newspapers and media, paving the way for more diverse and dynamic expression of views and exchange of information,’’ she said.

--IPS NEWS--

SPECIAL SEGMENT ON TV FOR BLOGGERS EVERY SUNDAY

April 03, 2008 22:18 PM

KUALA LUMPUR, April 3 (Bernama) -- The Information Ministry will create a special segment on RTM's news bulletin every Sunday for bloggers to directly comment on issues.

Its minister Datuk Ahmad Shabery Cheek said the 20-minute programme, starting on April 20, would be broadcast on RTM1 as one of the segments of Warta Perdana, the prime news bulletin.

He said the special segment was created not just to provide an avenue for bloggers to voice their opinions on various issues, but also to prove the government's openness in dealing with the alternative media.

"As stated before, the ministry would be more open with the alternative media, so we decided to have this special slot for bloggers, to discuss current issues or issues they wish to raise.

"I believe this is a step forward which the people have been waiting for and welcome," he told a press conference at his office in Angkasapuri here Thursday.

Ahmad Shabery said the decision also showed that the government had always been confident of the people's mandate all this while, hence showing the strength of the government which needed not worry and hide its motives in whatever situation.

On the selection of bloggers to be interviewed, he said this would be determined by the RTM selection panel from time to time, depending on the issue to be discussed.

"We look at the issue, not the personality. Besides the well-known bloggers, we will also feature new ones. We leave it to RTM, this is not for the ministry to decide."

On the possibility of the guest commentators (bloggers) getting out of control or speaking with no restraint, he believed they would follow the rules of conduct set.

But the ministry's openness would indirectly encourage the bloggers interviewed to be more responsible with what they posted on the Internet, he said.

"This is a process of educating the public, that the government’s openness should be viewed positively. This is an avenue for them to convey their feelings and opinions in a courteous way. I am confident the bloggers will respect this openness."

Ahmad Shabery also announced the cabinet's decision to broadcast live the question-and-answer session in Parliament every day of the parliamentary sitting from April 30.

He said the matter was agreed upon by Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Aziz and the other cabinet ministers at their meeting on Wednesday.

"The 30-minute programme featuring the question-and-answer session will begin at 10am on each day of parliamentary sitting.

"We view the cabinet's willingness to allow the live broadcast as indicative of the government's increasing confidence, openness and transparency as promised to the people."

He said the programme would be aired by RTM1, while the Klasik Nasional radio channel would include interviews with parliamentarians, including from the opposition.

--BERNAMA--

BETTER THAN 'BOHSIA'

SURAT TERBUKA UNTUK SUFIAH YUSSUF.

DIKAU BELUM TERLEWAT

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_R5m8qDsgyrY/R_L8PP3H1OI/AAAAAAAAAVc/d1qwPHNH338/s320/sufiah.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5184483459942831330" />

Assalamualaikum w.b.t

Wahai saudara seagama-ku Sufiah Bt. But instead her life has spiralled completely out of control."

Life has never quite added up for Sufiah. Her descent into prostitution in Salford, Manchester, is the latest in a long line of tragedies to have engulfed her since the sunny day when she posed with her university mortar board for the world's press outside prestigious St Hilda's College.

Our shock revelations today come in the week her domineering dad Farooq was jailed for sexually assaulting two 15-year-old girls as he home-tutored them in maths.

And he was always at the root of all her troubles— even as she passed the further maths A-Level she needed for entry to Oxford at the age of 12. In those days Sufia was a strict Muslim child who prayed five times a day and was subjected to her father's famous Accelerated Learning Technique.

Her days involved stretching and breathing exercises in freezing rooms to keep her brain attentive.

Sufiah would then study hard and be forced to play tennis with just as much intensity as fanatical Farooq drove her on. The routine was so effective Sufiah was seeded number eight in the country for under 21s.

But three years into Oxford, the 15-year-old sparked a massive police hunt after running away.

Abuse

At the time her father bizarrely claimed Sufiah had been kidnapped and brainwashed by an organisation seeking the key to her intelligence.

But Sufiah sent an email to her family describing her life under her father as a "living hell".

One message to her sister read: "I've finally had enough of 15 years of physical and emotional abuse. You know what I am talking about."

Sufiah was missing for two weeks before being found in an internet café in Bournemouth where she had been working as a hotel waitress.

She refused to go back to her parents and instead was taken into the care of social services.

It was then revealed that Farooq had been jailed for three years in 1992 for his part in a £1.5m mortgage swindle. Before that—at the age of 19—he had been sent to borstal for his role in a conspiracy involving £100,000.

Free from the spell of her father, Sufiah returned to Oxford to complete the final year of her Masters in Maths.

But she was now more concerned with enjoying herself—and failed to finish the course after meeting trainee lawyer Jonathan Marshall.

They were married in 2004 when Sufiah was just 19 and Jonathan 24. But the strains with her family were still there.

Despite being invited, Sufiah's parents and four brothers and sisters failed to turn up to the wedding.

Her dreams of a happy life with Jonathan were shattered when the couple divorced just a year later.

Now, in her sad little flat, she uses her body to pay the rent. Sufiah met our man, posing as a punter, at the entrance to her building wearing a tiny skirt, leather boots and a tight t-shirt. She was carrying three mobile phones.

She laughed and joked as she led him to her small apartment where a bed was already set out in the lounge.

She told him it was £130 an hour and offered him a glass of water before putting some music on to a cheap portable stereo and nervously stripping down to her red lace bra and knickers.

Sufiah then peeled off her underwear and danced on the bed. She told him she did full sex with a condom and oral sex without protection.

After our man had made his excuses, Sufiah kept him talking by telling him how she was studying for a Masters degree in Economics on a part-time two year course in London.

The former prodigy added: "I've got exams coming up and I'm thinking ‘Oh my God!'"

Once described by her parents as "naïve and unstreetwise", she works alone from her flat without any obvious physical security or protection.

She even admitted to our reporter: "It's always a surprise who you are going to meet."

Cheerful Sufiah gave no indication of any sadness at the jailing of her father the previous day. On Wednesday Farooq, 50, was sentenced to 18 months at Coventry Crown Court for touching two 15-year-old girls when he was home tutoring them at maths.

The court heard how in May last year Farooq arrived at one of the victim's home for a maths lesson.

He started whispering in her ear and kissing her hair and cheek. He also touched her breast and told her she was a genius and pretty before putting her hand on his upper thigh.
Destroyed

Farooq's defence lawyer Tim Hannam said: "He's been back in prison for over five months and knows there'll be no more teaching and any hope he had of gaining an income from the teaching method he had developed to a high degree of success is lost to him. His reputation is destroyed."

Now it's clear the daughter who fled his strict regime has almost been destroyed too.

Her friend said last night: "Sufiah has suffered so many knocks in her life. I just hope she can drag herself out this life she has got herself into.

"She is a good person and deserves a much better life than this. Her gift really has been a curse."

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_R5m8qDsgyrY/R_L8Ov3H1LI/AAAAAAAAAVE/NneqMIV2xps/s320/SY01.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5184483451352896690" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_R5m8qDsgyrY/R_L8O_3H1MI/AAAAAAAAAVM/6c0L9c1HA2E/s320/SY02.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5184483455647864002" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_R5m8qDsgyrY/R_L8O_3H1NI/AAAAAAAAAVU/EFvr2tIla_E/s320/SY03.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5184483455647864018" />

--News Of The Week--

SUFIAH's SEX JOB SHOCKS EX-HUSBAND

Wednesday April 2, 2008

KUALA LUMPUR: Sufiah Yusof’s ex-husband Jonathan Marshall has expressed sadness and complete shock over the one-time child prodigy selling herself for £130 (RM829) per hour.

Britain's Daily Telegraph quoted him as saying: “I am completely shocked. It’s very sad, actually. It’s very shocking that someone can use himself or herself in such a way.”

“I can’t fathom why she would do it – especially someone in her situation. Despite the problems with her family she had many advantages, which other people don’t have,” he said.

“It’s a particular shock – her coming from a Muslim background. To see pictures of somebody doing that – somebody I knew very closely – it makes me think, how did she get to that stage. Quite frankly she knows well enough what she should and should not do.”

“Genius on the game,” a newspaper had announced on Sunday.

“For sad Sufiah the daily equation she has to solve is simply sex equals £130.”

Britain’s News of the World on Sunday went on to relate how Sufiah, admitted to Oxford University at the age of 13, had taken to hiring herself out over the Internet as a prostitute – or “Asian escort” as she termed it – at the rate of £130 per hour.

Estranged from her family, she had adopted the working name of Shilpa Lee and set up shop in a backstreet flat in Salford, Manchester.

Marshall went on to say: “My view is that people can blame childhood to a certain extent, but there also comes a point where you have to take responsibility for your own actions.

“She had her advantages: she had someone willing to support her while she was at university. One newspaper told me that it had offered a substantial amount for her story. Personally, I’d rather sell my story than sell myself.”

The two fell in love and married in 2004. Marshall, a law student, had already converted to Islam. He was 24 and she was 19. The marriage lasted less than two years.

“The reason we split was that I became more observant and Sufiah became less so,” The Daily Telegraph quoted Marshall as saying.

“That took her in the wrong direction, away from the direction in which I wanted to go. The teachings of Islam are fundamental to your everyday life, so when paths diverge in that respect it is a major issue.”

Marshall, speaking yesterday from Saudi Arabia where he works for a leading firm of City solicitors, told The Daily Telegraph that Sufiah was confused.

“She didn’t know quite what she wanted. She wasn’t ready to settle down. Basically, she wanted to be a student,” he said.

“She wasn’t particularly extrovert. She wasn’t a difficult person to live with. We simply had different goals, different ideas of where we wanted to be. There were, to my knowledge, no affairs or anything. I never considered such a thing, simply because of the religious basis of our marriage.”

He added that there was little contact between Sufiah and her family in her final year at Oxford, but some bridges were mended when family members attended the couple’s Islamic wedding ceremony.

He did not gain the impression during the marriage that Sufiah had been subjected to physical abuse by her father as a child. Psychological abuse was another matter.

Sufiah completed her course but failed to take her final exams, ostensibly because of her health.

When Marshall secured a job with one of the “magic circle” law firms, the couple moved to London and then, briefly, to Singapore.

It was there that they decided to split. On returning to London, Sufiah was admitted to London University’s School of Oriental and African Studies to read economics.

Despite their split in August 2005, Marshall supported her for eight months before taking up a job with his firm in Saudi Arabia. "Global warming has not stopped," said senior scientific co-ordinator of the World Meteorological Organisat-ion's climate programme Amir Delju. Last year was among the six warmest years since records began in the 1850s.

This year has started with odd weather including a New Year cold snap in India that killed more than 20 people.

Light snow fell in Baghdad in what weather officials said was the first time in 100 years.

Rare snowfalls were also recorded in the west and central Iraq, plunging temperatures to zero degrees Centigrade and even colder.

Morning temperatures uncharacteristically hovered around freezing, and Baghdad airport was closed because of poor visibility.

The snow in Baghdad began falling before dawn and continued until after 9am, residents said. Iraqis welcomed snow as an omen of peace.

Although the white flakes quickly dissolved into gray puddles, they brought an emotion rarely expressed in Baghdad snarled by army checkpoints, divided by concrete walls and ravaged by sectarian killings - delight.

Meteorology department, director Dawood Shakir, said climate change was possibly to blame for the unusual event.

"It's very rare. Baghdad has never seen snow falling in living memory," he said.

"These snowfalls are linked to the climate change that is happening everywhere. We are finding some places in the world which are warm and are supposed to be cold."

"I asked my mother, who is 80, whether she'd ever seen snow in Iraq before, and her answer was no," said 40-year-old Fawzi Karim, who runs a restaurant in Hawr Rajab, 10km southeast of Baghdad.

Snow was also reported in the mountainous Kurdish region, north of the country, where falls are common.

Meanwhile, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad toured northern areas of the country hard hit by a cold snap and heavy snowfalls that have led to some deaths.

Mazandaran and other northern provinces next to the Caspian Sea have suffered particularly from the colder than usual winter and fuel shortages.

Some areas of Iran have seen snow for the first time in years. Officials said a number of people had died last week from the cold or in traffic accidents caused by the weather.

Government offices, schools and universities were closed in some regions to conserve fuel.

His legacy is two-fold. On the one hand, he and the Ba’ath Party were the impetus behind turning Iraq from an Arab nation indistinguishable from its Arab neighbors to the most advanced Arab country in history. From 1973 to 1990, the literacy rate in Iraq rose from 35% to over 90%. Thousands of miles of roads were built and the country was completely electrified. Excellent universal health care, as well as education from primary school to university, was offered free-of-charge. Foreign scholars and writers were invited to visit Iraq and write about the country, as well as the Arab world. The Iraqi government gave them housing and paid their salaries so they could gain and disseminate information. In 1987, the New York Times called Baghdad "The Paris of the Middle East.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_R5m8qDsgyrY/R3M5XISBfiI/AAAAAAAAASI/bNFs44qBVH4/s320/saddam_elvis.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5148521868537462306" />On the other hand, after the U.S. attack on Iraq in 1991 that destroyed much of the country, and a 12-year devastating embargo, Saddam Hussein’s critics blamed him for the demise of the country that once was the jewel of the Arab world: the country his leadership produced.
Saddam Hussein’s name was used by mainstream Western media to depict a barbaric and sadistic person. The scribes conveniently forgot, or did not take the time to learn about, the years in which Iraq was the premier Arab state that offered more human rights to its public than other Arab nations, especially in the area of freedom of religion and the liberation of women.

This is not a history of his regime, but a view of him and his steadfastness after April 9, 2003, the date to which many people refer to as "The Fall of Baghdad."
On April 9, 2003, Saddam Hussein made his last public appearance. He was surrounded by tens of thousands of supporters in Baghdad who raised him up to the roof of his car so he could wave to them all. Then, the car sped away.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_R5m8qDsgyrY/R3M5XYSBfjI/AAAAAAAAASQ/nGziNS3koWU/s320/saddam14.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5148521872832429618" />Speculation was rampant for the next few months. Was Saddam alive or dead? Was he involved with the quickly-growing resistance? Nobody seemed to know.
Then, in December 2003, we all saw the photos of a disheveled Saddam Hussein after he was pulled out of a "spider hole" in a town near Tikrit. The administration laughed and the U.S. made public jokes about him and his hiding place.
The room was dirty. There was an empty can of Spam. The story was that he was holed up there and was totally irrelevant to Iraq. His day was done and he was now in the hands of Iraq’s liberators. What you saw wasn’t real. Nothing of this scenario was true.

On March 8, 2005, United Press International (UPI) ran a short press release titled "Public Version of Saddam Capture Fiction." It received little publicity in the U.S., but some foreign news agencies did run the story. I researched and found only one U.S. news outlet that carried the article: WHAM Channel 13 of Rochester, New York.

The UPI press release consisted of quotes from an ex-U.S. Marine of Lebanese descent, Nadim Rabeh. In addition to the U.S. version of the capture date being off by two days, during an interview in Lebanon, Rabeh stated:

I was among the 20-man unit, including eight of Arab descent, who searched for Saddam for three days in the area of Dour near Tikrit, and we found him in a modest home in a small village and not in a hole as announced. We captured him after fierce resistance during which a Marine of Sudanese origin was killed.

Rabeh recounted how Saddam fired at them with a gun from the window of a room on the second floor. Then, the Marines shouted at him in Arabic, "You have to surrender. There is no point in resisting."

How did we come to see the pictures of the hole and a scruffy-looking Saddam Hussein? According to Rabeh, "Later on, a military production team fabricated the film of Saddam’s capture in a hole, which was in fact a deserted well."

The former Marine’s account mixes with the rendition Saddam Hussein gave his lawyer when they had their first meeting. Saddam told him that he was captured in a friend’s house and that he was drugged and tortured for two days, hence the pictures of Saddam looking bedraggled.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_R5m8qDsgyrY/R3M5XYSBfkI/AAAAAAAAASY/zcd2_p8e_l0/s320/saddam12.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5148521872832429634" />All the major news networks and publications showed pictures of the hole and a beleaguered Saddam: Time Magazine, CNN News, magazines, daily newspapers, etc. You name it and they published it. But, they were all wrong. Not one publication took the time to research the story. They ran the pictures supplied by the U.S. military and parroted the lines they were given.

This was not the first time something similar has occurred. After the 1989 invasion of Panama, the U.S. allowed the press to enter Manuel Noriega’s office. He was portrayed as a sexual pervert. In the office were pictures of young boys, a picture of Hitler, red underpants and pornographic magazines.

A few months later, the first Marine to enter Noriega’s office was released from the Corps. He eventually talked to a reporter and gave his story of the encounter. He maintained that the contents of the office included only a desk, a telephone, a chair, and a typewriter.

With Saddam, the props were changed. They were made to make Saddam look like a caged animal on the run who only had the basic elements to survive. No one asked questions of what should have been obvious. For instance, how did Saddam Hussein come into possession of a can of Spam? There was absolutely no place in Iraq where Spam was sold. In addition, it contains pork, a food forbidden from a Moslem’s diet.

A few months after his capture, a picture was widely distributed that gained much publicity. It showed a bunch of U.S. soldiers standing next to an Iraqi building on which a painted illustration depicted the blowing up of the World Trade Center. The inference was that Iraqis took glee in the acts of the destruction of the World Trade Center on 9-11-2001.

If one looked close, it was evident that the soldiers were standing on the base path of a disused baseball field. There were no baseball fields in Iraq. Upon closer scrutinizing, the trees were typical southeastern U.S. types that are not indigenous to Iraq.

The photo was bogus. It was filmed in the U.S., but, the harm had been done. Many news agencies had distributed the picture. Its contents inflamed U.S. citizens even more about the Iraqi people.

When Saddam was captured, U.S. authorities said he was a spent force and he had no say in the ever-growing resistance. This was another propaganda exercise because subsequent information shows he was heading the resistance and called many shots. For instance, on Paul Wolfowitz’ first visit to Baghdad, he stayed at the Hotel al-Rashid. A rocket fired at the building killed a U.S. colonel on the floor just above that of Wolfowitz, who was visibly shaken by the incident. Saddam Hussein personally ordered that strike.

Many Iraqis challenged the scenario of Saddam’s capture. The U.S. administration thought that by humiliating him, the Iraqi public would discount his presence. Just the opposite occurred. On the evening of the announcement of Saddam’s capture, pro-Saddam Hussein rallies sprung up. His supporters, who, instead of looking at him as a humiliated ex-leader, showed their admiration for him because they knew the U.S. story of his capture was fabricated. Students in schools brought pictures of Saddam to class. In one instance, U.S. military personnel surrounded a Baghdad school and apprehended a few dozen 14-year-old students, whom they tortured for a few hours.

The image of a cowardly Saddam giving up without a fight did not set well with Iraqis. A retired colonel in the Iraqi army sent me the following responses to the capture:

* Saddam’s inside wear was very clean, which gives the impression he was not in a hole.
* At the time they said the captured him, no dates were available, but the trees they showed in the films had fresh dates on the palm trees and this was not possible.
* My house is in the Adhamiya and I can say that I saw Saddam after they announced the fall of Baghdad. I saw him myself. He was standing on the bonnet of a car. He was giving smiles to the people around him who were encouraging him by their loyalty, which they always had.
* As I know, Saddam was on top of the battle at the airport.
* What I heard was that he was on top of many assaults against the Americans.

Iraq Screen published an article shortly before Saddam Hussein’s assassination. The author interviewed an Iraqi officer of the Republican Guard who participated in the battle for the airport in Baghdad in April 2003. The officer recalled:

While I was busy shooting with my colleagues, all of a sudden, we found Saddam Hussein with a number of his assistants inside the airport, we were really surprised because we did not expect such a thing, but Saddam went forward and took an RPG and put it on his shoulder and began to shoot by himself. We gathered around him and begged him to stay aside and leave us fighting because if we would be killed, we are common officers, but if he is killed, we would lose our leader. Saddam turned to us and said, "Look, I am no better than any one of you and this is the high time to defend our great Iraq and it would be a great honor to be killed as a martyr for the sake of Iraq."
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_R5m8qDsgyrY/R3M5F4SBfcI/AAAAAAAAARY/Q-juttyMaRM/s320/saddam2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5148521572184718786" />From various sources, we now have a totally different story from the one force-fed to us by the U.S. administration. Instead of Saddam Hussein being a coward who fled and was caught in a hole in the ground, he was now the president, who, under siege, met publicly with his people on April 9, 2003 (video of this was shown on U.S. television) after personally being involved with several battles against the invaders, and who created a network of resistance while tens of thousands of U.S. military people were looking for him.

Shortly before his hanging, Saddam spoke of his days on the run with his lawyers. For nine months, he openly conducted the resistance, many times right under the noses of his would-be captors. He told of swimming in the Tigris River or using a small boat if he needed to maneuver in the area.

One thing is sure. Most 66-year-old men would be contemplating retirement. But, Saddam Hussein lived off his wits, the land, and with comrades for nine months, all the time coordinating a resistance against illegal invaders of his country. Most men half his age would not be able to withstand the physical challenges of such a routine.

Unfortunately, the U.S. government is in possession of all of Iraq’s records prior to April 2003. Not one word will be mentioned that will contradict the U.S. rewriting of Iraq’s history. At best, we will have to rely on anecdotal accounts and eye witnesses. It is neither the best nor the most accurate form of history, but it’s all we have now.

On November 5, 2006, Saddam Hussein was sentenced to death by hanging. The verdict came after what could possibly be called the worst travesty of justice ever seen in a courtroom. It is hard to conceive how a man of his age endured more than a lifetime of hardship, torture and personal bereavement in just three-and-a –half years without losing his mental faculties or selling out to his opponents.

In July 2003, Saddam Hussein saw photos of his two dead sons on television. Their bodies were ridden with bullet holes. His 14-year-old grandson was killed along with his sons in an hours-long attack on a house by hundreds of U.S. military personnel in Mosul, northern Iraq.

For his first few months in captivity, he was not allowed to see a lawyer. In that time, he was tortured and questioned. He also was offered deals by the U.S. that would have obtained him a "get out of jail free" pass if he cooperated and gave the captors information about the resistance. He never capitulated.

Saddam Hussein was not allowed to see his family. Most of his correspondence to them was either not delivered, or highly censored. By now, most human beings would be willing to say anything their kidnappers desired.

In 2004, Frank Morrow, producer of one of the finest political shows ever seen on U.S. TV screens, Alternative Views, was asked about Saddam’s plight in comparison to that of another president kidnapped by the U.S., Manuel Noriega. Morrow discussed how Noriega collapsed in a few days of U.S. incarceration and spilled his guts. Morrow then stated, "Saddam is made of sterner stuff."

On his first day in court, Saddam was a few minutes late. The judge asked him why he was not on time and Saddam told him that the elevators of the building were not working. The judge then said he would ask the Americans to try to fix the faulty lifts. Saddam looked the judge in the eye and said, "Don’t ask them. You tell them. You are an Iraqi." The judge was silent. The accused gave him a lesson in citizenship.

This was Saddam Hussein’s first court appearance and it was televised. The U.S.-appointed collaborators thought by televising the trial, he would be held in humiliation by the Iraqi public. The ploy backfired. Saddam’s chastising of the judge intrigued the viewers. In future sessions, the sound of the broadcasts were cut if the judge did not want the public to hear what Saddam had to say. The first judge must be given credit for fairness. It appeared that he was giving both sides time to present their cases. Then, he resigned. He publicly stated that the Iraqi government had pressured him and given him instructions not to be impartial with Saddam. The next judge was a travesty and he made it be known from his first day that there would not be an honest trial for Saddam Hussein.

We have read page-after-page of the illegality of Saddam’s trial in various media. The anomalies are for too many to address here. However, with each preposterous turn, Saddam kept his ground and never capitulated to the court.

For months, every conceivable scenario emerged: Saddam was dragged out of court; his lawyers were kicked out of court; defense witnesses were tortured by the court; the judge destroyed a videotape that clearly showed the head prosecutor was lying; and Saddam and a few of his comrades went on hunger strikes.

Still, he showed up in court with the wit and physical appearance of a man decades younger. All the atrocities committed against him never made him appear to be desperate and he never showed signs of caving in.

Several times, Saddam was approached by U.S. officials to make a deal. The Iraqi resistance had grown to a formidable foe that was on the verge of forcing a U.S. withdrawal from Iraq and the U.S. knew that Saddam still held enough power to persuade a major portion of the resistance to lay down its weapons. Instead of accepting an offer for his freedom on some small island in the Pacific, Saddam retained his dignity. Other Ba’ath Party members who were imprisoned were given chances to be freed and made wealthy if they testified against Saddam. They all refused to sell out.

When the verdict of death for Saddam was announced on November 5, 2006, many groups, individuals and governments were outraged. They tried to get the U.N. to intervene, but to no avail.

Many quotes came forth from foe and friend of Saddam. The most preposterous came from Nouri al-Maliki, the so-called Iraqi prime minister:

This ruler has committed the most horrible crimes. He executed the best scientists, academics and thinkers.

That statement was outrageous, but many people who read it will believe it. For the preceding year, hundreds, if not thousands, of professors, scientists and doctors were killed in Iraq by agents of the Maliki government. During Saddam’s time, these professionals flourished and were the pride of Iraq. Maliki added them to the long list of fictitious victims of Saddam Hussein’s rule.

The announcement of the verdict backfired. The U.S. thought it would further erode Saddam’s importance to the Iraqi public, but just the opposite occurred. The website www.al-moharer.net posted this message shortly after the announcement:

We learned that demonstrators are all over Iraq in protest of the sentence. In Baghdad, American soldiers are busy painting over the slogans that people wrote on the walls and in intersections.

The U.S. media failed to show photos of these incidents, yet the international press displayed many. Within a few more hours, the demonstrations escalated and U.S. vehicles were targeted by the crowds.

The only hope that Saddam Hussein had to stop his date with the gallows was an appeal from his defense team to an appeals court. The defense had a time limit in which to file the appeal, yet the court that tried Saddam did not give his defense the necessary information to file the appeal. Weeks went by without the court even giving the defense team a summary of the charges. When Saddam’s team received the necessary information, it only had a few days to file an appeal. The defenders had to create an appeal in a few days that normally would take a month or two to construct. Every obstacle was put in place to keep justice from seeing even a ray of daylight.

The appeals court took two days to read 1,500 pages of documents presented by the defense and then issued a denial for the appeal on December 26, 2006.. No court in the world can decipher this number of pages in such a short time, not even a legitimate court.

Despite there being no time limit for the appeals court to reach a decision, it made one in two days. The next step was to affix a date for the execution. It had to be within 30 days of the announcement of December 26th.

--uruknet.info--

INTERNAL SECURITY ACT - ISA

AKHIRNYA KENA JUGA

Akhirnya lima pemimpin tertinggi HINDU RIGHT ACTION FORCE (HINDRAF), dikenakan tahanan AKTA KESELAMATAN DALAM NEGERI (ISA) setelah diperinci oleh pemimpin tertinggi Malaysia.
<img style="float:left;

Five ethnic Indian rights activists have been arrested in Malaysia, under a rarely used security law that allows indefinite detention without trial.

The men belong to the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf), which organised a mass rally last month alleging discrimination against ethnic Indians.

Analysts say the arrests are likely to stoke more racial tension.

The five men are being held under the Internal Security Act (ISA), which human rights groups want to abolish.

The act is not thought to have been used against government critics since 2001.

Ethnic Indians - mainly Hindus - form one of Malaysia's largest minority groups.

Activists say that many Hindus live in poverty, partly because of policies granting jobs and economic advantages to the ethnic Malay Muslim majority.

But the government rejects claims of unfair discrimination.

Laporan paling terkini dari thestar Malaysia menyatakan bahawa Peguam terkemuka, Karpal singh memfailkan writ habeas corpus bagi membebaskan dua orang peguam yang ditahan dibawah ISA iaitu M.Manoharan dan V.Ganabatirau.
<img style="float:left; Uthayakumar, M. Manoharan, R. Kenghadharan, V. Ganabatirau and T. Vasanthakumar would not silence the movement, which the government has accused of stirring up racial tension.

"Regardless of the arrests this struggle will move on. We have many leaders who are waiting to take over and we will not go backwards but move ahead with the fight for the rights of Indians in Malaysia," S. Jayathas told AFP.

The ISA is currently being used to hold more than 100 people, including about 80 alleged Islamic militants.

It is not thought to have been used against government critics since 2001, when Malaysia was under the iron grip of former premier Mahathir Mohamad who used it to quell a reform movement triggered by the arrest of his deputy Anwar Ibrahim.

Opposition leader Lim Kit Siang condemned the government's move and said that if the Hindraf leaders had committed any offence they should be charged and tried in an open court.

"It is deplorable, the use of the ISA is completely indefensible," he told AFP.

"To resort to detention without trial is a regression to the dark days of human rights violations and is something that will bring further shame to Malaysia's international image and reputation."

Three of the Hindraf leaders have already been charged with sedition for speeches in which they criticised preferential treatment for Muslim Malays who make up 60 percent of the population and control the government.

Malaysia is also home to ethnic Chinese, who make up 26 percent of the population and dominate business.

Ethnic Indians, who make up 8.0 percent, complain they run a distant third in terms of wealth, opportunities and education.

Abdullah has for several weeks been threatening to invoke the draconian legislation against Hindraf, which authorities have accused of having links with Sri Lanka's Tamil Tigers. The group denies the charges.

Malaysia's ethnic Indians are mostly Tamils -- the descendents of indentured labourers brought here by the British in the 1800s.

Lawyers and human rights group have warned that the use of the ISA will only inflame the protest movement, which is airing grievances that have been bottled up for many years.

Malik Imtiaz Sarwar from the National Human Rights Society (Hakam) said the government's move was regrettable and unnecessary.

"The ISA detention will have the unfortunate effect of now stopping genuine attempts on the part of the marginalised Indian community to have their grievances addressed," he told AFP.

The legislation -- which dates back to the British colonial era when it was used against communist insurgents -- provides for two-year detention periods that can be renewed indefinitely.

Malik Imtiaz said that the opposition figures detained during the "Reformasi" movement of Anwar Ibrahim were mostly held for about two years before being released.

--AFP.GOOGLE.COM--

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ETHNIC INDIANs ARRESTED FOR 'POSING RISK TO SECURITY'
Venkatesan Vembu
Thursday, December 13, 2007 20:53 IS

HONG KONG: Malaysian authorities on Thursday arrested five top leaders of the Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) under a draconian internal security law that provides for indefinite detention without trial.

Deputy Internal Security Minister Johari Baharom said the five leaders – P. Uthayakumar, M. Manoharan, R. Kengadharan, B. Ganabathi Rao and T. Vasantha Kumar – had been detained “for carrying out activities that threaten national security.”

Hindraf is spearheading a campaign to protest the race-based discrimination and economic marginalisation faced by ethnic Indians, who account for 8% of Malaysia’s population of 27 million. On November 25, a Hindraf-led rally drew 30,000 ethnic Indians, the largest anti-government gathering in decades.

The government of Abdullah Ahmad Badawi denies Hindraf’s charges of racial discrimination and has in turned accused the group’s leaders of fanning ethnic divisions. Just last week, Malaysia’s top police official claimed that Hindraf leaders were linked to “terrorist groups,” an allusion to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, which is fighting for a Tamil homeland in Sri Lanka.

The arrests were widely condemned by Opposition leaders and human rights activists, who see them as a desperate action by the Abdullah Ahmad Badawi government, and as marking a return to the dictatorial ways of the Mahathir Mohamad era.

“We condemn these arrests,” said Lim Guan Eng, head of the Democratic Action Party, the largest Opposition party. “It is a desperate act of last resort and if the government has any evidence, it should charge them in an open court.”

For now, however, Hindraf’s second-rung leadership is calling for calm. “We appeal to all our supporters to remain calm and do not listen to any rumours or untruth that may be spread to break our unity,” a Hindraf statement said.

By Claudia Theophilus in Kuala Lumpur.

Malaysian police have fired tear gas and water cannon to break up a massive street demonstration by ethnic Indians in the country's largest city, Kuala Lumpur.
Police say more than 60 people were arrested and are being held in police stations around the city following Sunday's protest.

Organisers put the number of arrested in the hundreds.
<img style="float:left; Uthayakumar Hindraf legal adviser and one of the rally's organisers told Al Jazeera.

But the government banned the demonstration saying it risked inflaming racial tensions in multi-ethnic Malaysia.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_R5m8qDsgyrY/R0pMgPGvebI/AAAAAAAAAOY/W019dbxGU18/s320/HINDRAF4.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137002441663805874" />
Indians are the third largest ethnic group in Malaysia and make up about seven per cent of Malaysia's population.

The protest was the second in two weeks to be forcefully broken up by police.

Earlier this month police used tear gas and chemical-laced water cannon to break up a protest calling for electoral reform.

In the days before Sunday's protest police had set up roadblocks across Kuala Lumpur and major highways leading into the city in an effort to prevent protesters from gathering.

Aside from the rally in central Kuala Lumpur, several thousand protesters gathered at the Batu Caves temple site on the outskirts of the city.

Organisers had promised a peaceful rally and planned to submit a petition to the British High Commission addressed to the Queen of England, blaming colonial era policies for the community's present predicament.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_R5m8qDsgyrY/R0pOHvGvedI/AAAAAAAAAOo/WqvPllc0NRE/s320/HINDRAF6.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137004219780266450" />
A lawsuit filed recently by Hindraf is seeking $4 trillion in compensation for the estimated two-million ethnic Indians whose ancestors were brought over to Malaysia as indentured labourers by Britain in the 1800s.

'No rights'

Malaysia was a British colony before gaining independence in August 1957.

But police surrounded the high commission and moved to break up the protest after demonstrators ignored orders to disperse.

Dressed in full riot gear, some carrying automatic weapons, police fired dozens of rounds of tear gas and chemical-laced water cannon into the crowds, causing protesters to scatter and run for shelter in nearby office buildings and banks.

Some of the protesters drenched in water laced with chemical irritants ripped off their shirts and shouted at the police to stop.
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp1.blogger.com/_R5m8qDsgyrY/R0pOHvGveeI/AAAAAAAAAOw/JnFsnhdjeQ8/s320/HINDRAF7.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137004219780266466" />
Others were seen doubled over on the road, retching and coughing from the effects of the tear gas.

"After 50 years, what freedom do we have?" said one protester. "The local newspapers say we're all united but we Indians have no rights."

Several times cheers went up as protesters lobbed tear gas canisters back at the police who were lined up fronting the twin towers.

Punesh, a secretary at a legal firm in the city, said the gathering would have remained calm if the police had allowed a group of people to submit the signatures to the British high commission.

"But police provoked public violence and people began retaliating to the water cannon and tear gas," she said. "I saw police catch a man and cover his head before beating him in full view of the public. It is shocking."

'Treated like criminals'

Another protester complained that ethnic Indians were born in Malaysia but are treated as second- or third-class citizens by the government controlled by ethnic Malays.

"We have come from far and near to gather peacefully but we're being treated like criminals," he said.

"No one is carrying any weapons so why are the police being this violent against us?"
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_R5m8qDsgyrY/R0pMfPGveXI/AAAAAAAAAN4/IxMNbdHqTm4/s320/HINDRAF.jpeg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5137002424483936626" />
Shanmugam, a protester who had travelled to Kuala Lumpur from the northern state of Kedah, said the government was using the riot police to attack the peaceful march.
"We're going along the way of India's Mahatma Gandhi… in a peace march for equal rights."

Samy Vellu, the president of the Malaysian Indian Congress and the only ethnic Indian in the Malaysian cabinet, denounced Sunday's protest as "an opposition ploy to smear the government's image."

"We do not support street demonstrations," he said in a statement. "We believe in working within the system. We have been working within the system to resolve the problems faced by the Indian community."

"There is still a lot more to be done for the Indians and we’ll continue with our struggle."

PETALING JAYA, Oct 25 (Bernama) -- The parents of Malaysian astronaut Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha Shukor arrived at the KL International Airport at 6.30pm today and immediately after that his father headed to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre (PPUM) here to be with their fourth son, who has been in coma since Sunday after accidentaly knocking into a pillar.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar's mother, Datin Zuraida Sheikh Ahmad, however, was taken back to her residence as she was not feeling well.
At the hospital, Sheikh Mustapha, was informed that Sheikh Mustafa Shukor Al Masrie's condition was due to a blood clot in his brain.

"What can I do. It has happened. One son is safe but the other's fate is still unknown. No matter how many operations have to be done, it is all in God's hands and I will accept whatever the outcome," he said when met by reporters at PPUM.

Sheikh Mustafa, 32, a building plan engineer, fell unconscious after accidentally knocking into a pillar outside a restaurant in Jalan Klang Lama here on Sunday, the same day his brother returned to Earth from the International Space Station after a 11-day space sojourn.

Sheikh Mustapha said that his son was not suffering from any illness that could have caused him to go into a coma.

"He is a healthy man and has no sickness. I don't know how this can happen to him," he said and urged Malaysians to pray for his son's recovery.

Asked on Sheikh Muszaphar's reaction after being informed of his younger brother's condition, Sheikh Mustapha said that he accepted the news calmly.

Sheikh Mustafa is the fourth of five siblings and is married with two children.
Sheikh Mustafa's wife Hayati Redha, 29, was also present with their children, Sheikh Aiman Shukor, three, and Siti Balqish, 18 months, but declined to speak to reporters.

--BERNAMA--

MALAYSIA'S ANGKASAWAN ASPIRES TO RETURN TO ISS AS COMMANDER

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 24 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's first angkasawan Dr Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor Sheikh Mustapha aspires to return to the International Space Station (ISS) as a mission commander in future.

Still missing life on the ISS, he also hopes to be there longer.

"I have been telling myself that I want to return to the ISS for six months and hoping that it will be as its commander. Godwilling, I will prove that I can do it," he said in an exclusive interview with Bernama's Radio 24 today.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar blasted off into space with a Russian cosmonaut and an American astronaut from Baikonur, Kazakhstan, for the ISS on Oct 10 and returned to Earth on Sunday.

He said that his success in completing the space mission proved he was serious in wanting to fulfill his responsibilities as a Malaysian. He said that he now felt free after having successfully fulfiled the huge responsibilities entrusted on him.

"I realised it was a huge responsibility for me and I am very grateful for having performed it well," he said in the interview from the post-space mission quarantine centre in Star City, Moscow.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar will be at the quarantine centre for between 10 days and two weeks for health monitoring before he can be allowed to come home.

He, however, is very grateful that throughout the space mission, he did not have any health problems and attributed his healthy condition to the Malaysians who prayed for him.

On the challenges facing him during the mission, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar said the biggest challenge was to carry out the experiments which had been entrusted on him.

"I realised the experiments like the one of Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia was crucial because the scientists had worked very hard for two years on it ... and I did the best possible," he added.

Dr Sheikh Muszaphar also said that he took the space mission seriously and not for fun.

"It was not for fun or merely to travel to space. To me, it was crucial to show the whole world that we, Malaysians, are capable of doing things like this," he said.

He said that he also felt elated and proud to be given the trust by the European Space Agency (ESA) to repair its equipment at the ISS.

"It was indeed a great honour that the ESA placed its trust in a Malaysian angkasawan to do the job," said the orthopaedic surgeon. In the interview, which lasted for almost an hour, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar was also asked on NASA's action in not recognising him as an angkasawan but only as a space flight participant.

"To me, regardless whether NASA called me a space flight participant or by any other name, what is important is that I'm recognised as an angkasawan by all Malaysians.

"Likewise the Russians, they recognised me as a Cosmonaut Researcher. This is important because I did the training with them and only they know what we (he and Kapt Dr Faiz Khaleed (Malaysia's back up angkasawan)) went through and how serious we were to accomplish the mission," he said.

He, however, said that the training they went through was different than the one required by space tourists, whose training was only for six months.

"Perhaps, I should also prove to them (NASA) that I am capable of doing the best. Hopefully, after this I will get to go to space longer, perhaps six months and be given the opportunity to work with NASA and to prove to them that we are as good their astronauts," he said.

Meanwhile, recalling the experience during landing in the Soyuz TMA-10 capsule, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar said he felt difficulty breathing and his chest felt like an elephant stepping on it.

"It felt like an elephant stepping on your chest... it pressed on your chest so hard that you felt like you were not able to breathe and uncomfortable. But we had been taught to breathe through our abdomen and release the air through the chest, the training saved us," he added.

During the interview, Dr Sheikh Muszaphar also took the opportunity to thank all Malaysians for their prayers and hoped Malaysia would produce more angkasawan and scientists in future.
He also hoped that Malaysia would make further inroads in aerospace development and produce its own rocket for a space mission.

--BERNAMA--
